California wins first anit-violence grant

Juvenile Justice Digest, Mar 29, 2001

The Department of Education made its first grant under the new funding program to prevent school violence to a district in California.

The agency awarded more than $50,000 to the Grossmont Union High School District under Project School Emergency Response to Violence (Project SERV).

Grossmont is the district that houses Santana High School in Santee where a student killed two students and wounded 13 other persons on March 5.

The grant provides financial assistance to local school districts that have experienced a traumatic event, such as a school shooting.

Congress appropriated $10 million for the project last year to be administered through the Department's Safe and Drug Free Schools Program.

Grossmont plans to use the funds for security, counseling, support, and translation services to allow the district to assist Spanishspeaking families.
