Obituaries: Roy Grace

Roy Grace, the esteemed art director, died of prostrate cancer in late February of 2003, at the age of 66. For nearly forty-years, Grace created numerous advertising campaigns, many of which were groundbreaking. His iconic work during die creative revolution in advertising during the '60s and 70s included the Spicy Maiball spot for Alka-Seltzer, and the Samsonite/Airierican'Iourister Gorilla commercial, both ol which used ingenious humor and catch phrases thai would remain influential for many years to come.

Born and raised in New York City, Grace studied at Cooper Union, and in 1964 went to work for Doyle Dane Bernbach, a New York agency that would prove to be one of the era's most legendary agencies, producing countless award-winning commercials and ad campaigns. After a brief stint with Gilbert Advertising, Grace returned to Doyle Dane, where he sooji became executive creative director. In 1986 he established his own ad agency, Grace & Rothschild. Grace will be remembered for his work on some of die most seminal commercials ever aired in the history of TV, more than twenty-five of which have been deemed \y/Advertinng Age as being among the 1OO greatest TV commercials ever made.
