Job losses at critical stage! Both US government and the press are missing the point!!

The loss of U.S.jobs has reached a critical stage. If you don't agree with me, consider the following facts:

U.S.firms shed 93,000 jobs in August 2003 for the seventh month in a row.

Since January 2003, the US, has lost 2.8 million jobs. Source: CNN Headline News, 6 p.m., September 5, 2003.

The manufacturing sector lost 2.5 million jobs this year alone for the following reasons:

1) Rising productivity due to the use of advanced technology means it takes less labor to get the job done and, therefore, corresponding layoffs; and

2) Cheaper foreign goods and lower wages offshore.

On one hand, we're conditioned to losing computer and manufacturing jobs and on the other, we're used to the administration doing nothing about it. We've been told that the current economy is changing from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. The problem is, some services, i.e., software development, customer service, tech/help desk, not to mention teleservices/ telemarketing, are now being lost to foreign countries. The question remains, when all manufacturing jobs are lost to offshore and all service jobs have been lost to offshore, what will Americans do next? Do we have to go back to farming?

Misguided Press And Administration

On one hand, President Bush decided to give the American people a $450 to $460 billion tax refund not too long ago in order to create only 1million jobs. Given the fact that in excess of 90,000 jobs are lost every month, this solution is nothing more than an exercise in futility. To me, this is analogous to the administration wishing to fill an empty drum with water at a rate of 5 gallons per minute, while 80 or 90 thousand holes at the bottom of the drum are letting out 80 gallons of water per minute. Obviously, this will never work until the administration begins to stop losing jobs in the manufacturing and service sectors. In my opinion, the tax refund simply doesn't make sense because no one in the administration is doing anything to prevent job exodus to other countries.

The National Press Is Not Far Behind The Administration!

While the devastating job losses cited here continue every single month, the national press continues to put its head in sand and cover insignificant stories like Kobe Bryant and even less significant, Arnold Schwarzenegger applying for a job for which he has no talent, no experience, not to mention any qualifications and about which nobody gives a damn! On a scale of 1 to 100, jobs are 500 and Arnold and Kobe are less than zero!

It is mind boggling why the administration and the media pay so little attention to the staggering job losses that are putting 90,000 people out of work every month. The number-one priority should be American job protection, job creation and saving jobs. Then, and only then, should we look for new ways to spend money to try and create new jobs!
