GAS President's Comments and Report from the Academy Council

Georgia Journal of Science, 2006 by Devore, Melanie

It gives me great pleasure to welcome members, friends and supporters of the Academy to the eighty-third Annual Meeting of the Georgia Academy of Science. This promises to be an especially exciting and informative meeting as the Academy convenes in the vibrant setting of the metro Atlanta area.

No meeting is possible without the hard work and energy of a cast if dedicated Academy members working behind the scenes. At least eight section officers organized sessions and arranged to have abstracts reviewed by peers. Once a session is set, Steve Whittle, Technical Program Chair, works with the Local Arrangement Committee to ensure the best possible facilities are secured for each session. Steve Whittle has done an outstanding job informing all the sections of procedures and deadlines and putting all the pieces together that sum up to a successful meeting. John Aliff, Editor of the Georgia Journal of Science, has spent considerable time editing the program while continuing to see that quality papers continue to be published in the pages of our Academy's journal.

John Aliff has also donated his talents and time to serve as this year's Local Arrangements Chair. John, along with a crew of colleagues, staff and students, has set the stage for a number of special events at this year's meeting.

I would like to thank President Rob Watts and Provost Deborah Preston for graciously making their campus available to the Academy. We look forward to a successful meeting and will remember the warm welcome you have shown us for years to come.
