Staff Education SIG Announces New Competency Publication
AAACN Viewpoint, May/Jun 2005 by Brautigam, Carol
A Guide to Ambulatory Care Nursing Orientation and Competency Assessment will be published in Spring 2005. This publication incorporates the three roles of ambulatory care nursing practice: Organizational/Systems, Clinical Nurse, and Professional Nurse. The competencies are designed for the RN and can easily be adapted for the LVN/LPN and other staff.
The guide will assist ambulatory health care organizations by listing competencies for ambulatory nursing; providing working definitions and components of those competencies; and allowing selection of the competencies that match a staff nurse's role.
The guide was developed by the AAACN Staff Education Special Interest Group (SIG) as a special project for 2004. Co-chairs of the project are Carol Brautigam and Marianne Sherman. The work group communicated regularly by e-mail and telephone conferences to develop the guide. Early in 2005, the work was reviewed by experts in ambulatory care nursing. How exciting it was for the work group to sit down together during the 2005 AAACN Annual Conference to review the final draft.
Project reviewers included:
Ruth Ann Obregon, MSN, MBA, RN
Eileen M. Esposito, RN, MPA
Peggy Ingram Veeser, EdD, APRN, BC
Diane Limbo, MS, BS, RN, CPNP
A focus for the 2006 Staff Education SIG is the development of a tool to assist nurses in the implementation of the guide. See the AAACN Web site for contact information if you would like to assist with this project.
Advance purchase for A Guide to Ambulatory Care Nursing Orientation and Competency Assessment is available for $49 (AAACN member price) and $59 (list price).
