Ninety Six Years Ago....

EDITORIALS

We Indian nurses unite with her friends the world over in congratulating Miss Florence Nightingale, O.M., although somewhat tardily, on reaching her ninetieth birthday. It occurred on the 12th of May, and she was the recipient of the following telegram from the King :

"On the occasion of your ninetieth birthday I offer you my heartfelt congratulation, and trust that you are in good health. - George R. & I."

The American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools and the Nurses' Associated Alumnae of the United States at their meetings in New York City in May held joint exercises in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the first training school for nurses, by Miss Nightingale, at St. Thomas's Hospital. They had also arranged a "Florence Nightingale Exhibit," showing portraits and a bust of Miss Nightingale, her complete writings and some autograph letters. Our readers may be interested to know that Miss Ruth Brewster Sherman, two of whose poems were in the first number of this Journal, wrote some verses to Miss Nightingale ten years ago, which are, to her surprise included in the exhibit, as she says, "Along with Longfellow, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps and Edwin Arnold. This is so sudden!"

We notice in one of the magazines a copy of "The Nightingale Pledge." Can some one among our readers tell us its origin and where it is used?
