Faculty/administrators in Colleges of Agriculture (COA) typically have little training in leadership beyond limited exposure in undergraduate courses, or brief leadership development programs. Consequently, they are seldom versed in emerging/salient leadership literature, and potential COA applications. An example of such literature is transactional versus transformational leadership.

Major objectives of this paper are to: 1) review pertinent literature on transactional versus transformational leadership; 2) appraise potential applications in a COA; and 3) present a case study of transformational leadership in COA academic programs.
Definitions of transactional vs. transformational leadership are first provided. Cognitive differences, major components, and relationships to colleagues are reviewed. Transformational empowerment with visioning and ethics is emphasized. The application of these concepts to diverse fields is listed.
Example activities of transactional and transformational leadership of administration/faculty in a COA are next presented. These activities are contrasted in the context of the leadership concepts previously enumerated. The complementary nature of these forms of leadership is noted.
Finally, a case study of moving to transformational leadership for a COA academic program is presented. Existing conditions mandating transformational leadership are listed along with the administrative/faculty response, resulting programmatic impacts, and an evaluation of the transformational leadership response.
