New Dimension Added to Online File Storage with FileViews

International Journal of Micrographics & Optical Technology, 2003

FilesAnywhere has unveiled a "breakthrough file management feature" that lets users organize, search and share documents online by creating virtual 'views' of their files. The innovative feature, called FileViews, provides a new categorized indexing and search functionality using a standard web browser, which the company claims no other storage provider has.

Last month, the application service provider introduced version control, version history and file sharing features to its web-based storage service. With these new document management features, Dallas-based FilesAnywhere has already seen an increase in new contracts from large organizations in need of distributed file collaboration for employees, clients and partners.

FileViews address the limitation of having just a single file structure - now users can categorize files in multiple folder hierarchies, using drag-and-drop links to original files and folders. This makes it very easy to find and work with related files, organized by any number of user-defined categories. The 'virtual folder' ability of File Views creates a new way to organize and manage files. Users can also combine files and folders from multiple folder locations and share all of them from a single shared FileView folder.

"The possibilities for file structures are now limitless," remarks Chetan Jaitly, Chief Software Architect. "File Views really adds a new dimension to document management, but within a framework than the average user can understand immediately, and master very quickly. Imagine combining all of your important documents into one location you can work with, without disturbing the original structure. That is what the FileViews feature achieves."

Other document management software applications allow files to be indexed and categorized for searching.

FilesAnywhere achieves this by letting users organize files and folders into new folder structures as links, which serve as pointers to the original files. To reveal files by category, users simply expand the category hierarchy, just like normal folders. Users can actually work with files using the File View structure, which modifies the original source files. For team collaboration, users can share access to a FileView with other users, and Version Control can be used within FileViews as well.
