New Document Storage Solution for Hospitals

International Journal of Micrographics & Optical Technology, 2004

SoftMed Systems has introduced RAAS DL, an enhanced long-term document storage solution for healthcare facilities. RAAS DL utilizes magnetic media to retain and quickly retrieve documents. Built with Microsoft SQL technology, RAAS-DL provides faster back-ups for more efficient processing and future scalability.

"In a healthcare facility, immediate access to patient information is a critical need," says Don Segal, CEO of SoftMed Systems. "RAAS DL ensures that documents are easy to store and easy to find. Scalable storage enables each facility to expand the system to meet future storage needs."

RAAS DL is compatible with Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Direct Attached Storage (DAS), a feature that supports flexibility in document warehousing. The solution can store documents created in SoftMed's ChartScript and ChartScan applications, as well as data created in third-party systems such as lab, pathology, radiology reports and other scanned images. In addition, RAAS DL is fully integrated with SoftMed's ChartView, providing users the ability to view all stored documents.

"The conversion process was automated, so RAAS DL was installed quickly and with ease at our facility," said Carol Pierce, Manager of Systems, Transcription and Tumor Registry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. "We have experienced dramatic improvements in turnaround times to retrieve and view stored documents through ChartView. And, as our storage needs continue to grow, the scalability features of RAAS DL will allow us to migrate the data to a SAN without any down time or loss of productivity."
