Muscle cars added to museum auction

National Dragster, May 30, 2003

The chrome-loving, horsepower-car-buying public asked for it, and they got it. THE Hot Rod Auction at the L.A. Roadsters Show, benefiting The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, is now an all-American metal affair.

"We had an unprecedented demand for muscle cars and all the cool cars from the '50s, '60s, and '70s," said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers. "Southern California is known for its diverse car culture, so it only makes sense to expand THE Hot Rod Auction to include all of the most popular types of collector cars."

Added Sam Jackson, executive director of the NHRA Museum, "I think it's a great idea. The auction will still focus on hot rods, but when it comes to cool cars, more is always better."

THE Hot Rod Auction, to be held Father's Day weekend (June 14-15), is part of a fun-filled hot rod weekend that includes the SO-CAL Open House June 13, The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum Memorabilia Auction June 13 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the L.A. Roadsters Show June 14-15 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A $12 super ticket can be purchased for admission into the L.A. Roadsters Show, The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, and THE Hot Rod Auction. The ticket can be purchased at any of the entrances to the L.A. Roadsters Show at Fairplex in Pomona. Shuttles will be available to transport people to and from all three events.

All proceeds from the June 13 auction will benefit The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. Historic, one-of-a-kind items from the museum's vaults and rare and unique donated items will be offered. The NHRA Museum will also benefit from a portion of the proceeds raised during the two-day Mecum collector-car auction.
