National Dragster, Jun 13, 2003
Cristen Powell, whose Top Fuel win at the 1997 Englishtown event made her the second-youngest person to win an NHRA Professional title, has donated her personal '67 Camaro to The Wally Parks NHRA Museum.
Powell purchased the Camaro when she was 15 and working in a grocery store, and it is the car that prompted her to go racing on her 16th birthday. The car, rebuilt from the ground up, includes a balanced Chevrolet 454 big-block engine rated at more than 500 horsepower, Dart heads, roller rockers, Crane cam, 700R4 automatic transmission, Hughes converter, four-wheel disc brakes, all-new Airotech interior, and custom paint.
"Athough it's a 10-second car, it is street legal and very drivable," said Casey Powell, Cristen's father. "We are pleased to donate this car to the Parks NHRA Museum to help it continue its mission of collecting and displaying the history of hot rodding and motorsports."
Powell's Camaro will be auctioned at the Mecum Collector Cars THE Hot Rod Auction, to be held June 14-15 next door to The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum at Fairplex in Pomona. The auction is part of a hot rod weekend that boasts a collection of interconnected events all taking place at Fairplex and revolving around the hot rod and classic cars: So-Cal Speed Shop Open House, The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum Memorabilia Auction, L.A. Roadsters Show, and Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers' THE Hot Rod Auction.
