KEARNEY RACEWAY PARK, Kearney, Neb. (Oct. 3) - Keith Kuehn (Pro), Jason Headley (Street Legal), and Kristen Baker (Jr. Dragster) defended their titles, and new class champions Terry Larsen (Super Pro), Terry Kuchera (Sportsman Trophy), and Josh Vettel (High School) were crowned at Kearney Raceway Park's final points race of 2004 and the NHRA King of the Track event.
In the first final of the day, Haley Strobel ran .001-second off her 7.94 dial to take the Jr. Dragster win over Tyler Dossett's 12.15 (12.10 dial). Lindsie Wooley and Randa Moody were semifinalists.
Vettel took his sixth High School win this season with an 11.35 (11.32) over Brandon Dack's 20.29 (20.54) breakout. casey Culbert was the lone semifinalist.
Darrell Goheen took Street Legal with a 13.04 (12.99) over Joe Roach's 17.40 (17.25). Headley was the semifinalist.
In Sportsman Trophy, Kuchera drove to a 12.02 (12.01) to defeat the .003-second breakout from Alan Cain's 12.29 dial. Terry Steinbeck was the lone semifinalist.
Mick Shanahan made his first trip to Kearney pay off with the Pro win. Shanahan ran a 12.265 (12.26) to trailer Tim Strong's 11.17 (11.15). Preston Oder and Carl Peterson were semifinalists.
Larsen used his best reaction of the day to claim Super Pro with a .504 light and a 9.03 (9.00) to John Oder's .524 light and 10.91 (10.88). Vie Gomez and Kuehn were semifinalists.
In the King of the Track competition, Larsen took the first-round win with a 9.04 (9.00) to Shanahan's 14.22 (14.26) breakout, and Goheen's 12.91 (12.99) took the double-breakout win over Kuchera's 11.90 (12.00). Goheen used a holeshot and a 13.03 (12.99) to claim the crown over Larsen's 9.01 (9.00). - Tim Sokoloski
