National Dragster, Sep 30, 2005 by Wilson, Dale
MONTGOMERY MOTORSPORTS PARK, Montgomery, Ala. (Aug. 27-28) - It might as well have been called "Family Days" at the most recent edition of Montgomery Motorsports Park's two-day Summit Championship Points Series events because several bracket racing families predominated. Those families included sons and daughters of former Southeastern bracket champs and even one son of track announcer Bucky Todd.
A cool $3,000 was on the line for winners in Super Pro, Footbrakers raced for a $1,000 winner's check, and about a dozen Jr. Dragster racers vied for $100.
Young Super Pro racer John Brown, son of bracket veteran Jerry Brown, was Saturday's first winner. Brown, like his father, has earned a reputation shoeing dragsters. Brown's '93 Innovative Chassis digger was victorious over Chevy II racer Trey Todd, son of longtime MMP announcer Bucky Todd.
Saturday's Pootbrake champ was Wilbur Baxley in his '65 Chevelle four-door wagon. Baxley beat traveling professional Footbraker Steve Stites in his '94 Cavalier.
Jeremy Britton won Jr. Dragster over Maribeth Kennington, and "Little" Jonathan Jones, son of famed Georgia bracket door car racer Ricky Jones, won the Quick 32 show over Jerry Adams in an all-dragster show that sported a 5.24 eighth-mile elapsed time as the bump.
Sunday's Super Pro winner was Rodney Carr, who kept his "Droopy Drawers" Camaro at home in favor of his "new" dragster. Carr beat Cole Cousins in his Camaro. In Footbrake, the winner was Matthew Bates, whose parents, John and Samantha are longtime Super Pro racers. Driving his mother's '99 Firebird, Bates defeated noted Footbrake and Super Pro shoe Toby Barnes when Barnes red-lighted with a .499. In Jr. Dragster, Saturday's runner-up Kennington beat Matthew Wilhelm for the title. - Dale Wilson
