Fontana, Calif. (Aug. 20-21) Steve Young and Glenn Kern earned victories in the Lucas oil Products Super Comp Association Series doubleheader, and Young's win moved him into the points lead with two races remaining.
Bobby Dye Jr. earned the PermaCoil Racing Low Qualifier award with an 8.904 at the sixth race of the year, which drew 41 cars. Sam Boyd, Young, Del Cox Jr., Tom McBride, Matt Woodard, Harold Meziere, and Melissa Quigley all qualified on the 8.90 index.
After defeating Mike Solina in the first round, Kern beat Young in the second, Justin Rebrovich in the third, and Dwight Strickland in the fourth. In the semifinals, Kern advanced when Guy Aguayo red-lighted by .001second.
Andy Spiegel stopped Jason Duncan in the first round, Boyd in the second, and Brian Calvin in the third. Spiegel then defeated points contender Brian Fischle in the quarterfinals to earn a bye into the final.
In the final round of the Lucas oil/Bonaco Performance Linesponsored race, Kern picked up his first win of the season, defeating Spiegel, 8.898 to 8.896.
In the weekend's second race, Young reached his second final of the year and defeated Paul Lorton.
John Richardson took home the Perma-Coil Low Qualifier award with a perfect 8.900 during the Lucas oil/American Exterminator-sponsored race, which had 46 entrants. David Cerny and Rich Pederson both clocked 8.902s. Don Barton, Matt Woodard, Dye, Rodger Comstock, Kevin Quinjan, and Tony Huff qualified on the 8.90 index.
Quarterfinal action began with Lorton defeating Les Harris, 8.931 to 8.935. Hubert Pierce used a .009 reaction to beat Danny Aguayo, and Young cut a .004 light to beat VaI Torres Jr., who fouled by .003-second.
Hubert Pierce was denied his first final-round showing of the season when he drew a -.007 red-light against Lorton in the semi's. Young advanced to the final with an 8.890 bye run.
The final round was a doublebreakout match with Young's American Exterminator-sponsored dragster getting the win over Lorton, 8.877 to 8.865.
With two races remaining, the top four drivers are within 27 points. Young has 421 points, followed by Fischle (401), Dye (397), and Kern (394). The remaining drivers in the top 10 are Richardson (337), Quinlan (328), Shannon Chennault (320), Ryan Tietz (317), Quigley (300), and Jeff DeRencin (289).
Barton leads the standings for the Rosa Maria's Top Qualifier Shootout, which will be contested during qualifying at the final race of the year. Barton has 16 points, followed by Young (15), Fischle (14), Richardson (11), Dye (10), Tom McBride (9), Kern (8), Megan McKernan (7), and Matt Woodard (7). - Bob Johnson
