Israel L. Gaither, 61, is the first Black commander of the United States Salvation Army. Gaither will lead the organization's more than 60,000 employees and 3.5 million volunteers in providing the nation's needy with social services.
Rowlan Hill is the first Black elected to the board of the World Automobile Auctioneers Professional Association (WAAPA). Hill was the first Black inducted into the World Wide College of Auctioneering Hall of Fame.
Renee R. Jenkins, M.D., was elected vice president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Jenkins, of Howard University, is the organization's first Black elected officer.
Cynthia E. Nance will be the first woman and the first Black dean of the University of Arkansas School of Law at Fayetteville. Nance, who specializes in labor and employment law, will begin her tenure July 1.
William E. McAnulty Jr., 58, has been appointed to the Kentucky Supreme Court. The first African American named to the state's highest court, McAnulty currently serves on the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
