Professional Responsibility

If you weren't a practice executive, what would you be? What is your not taken?

"From childhood I had little doubt that I would become a physician. I could not have conceived of being anything else. Life had other plans, however. The increasing complexity of the health care delivery and payer environment necessitated my increasing involvement in management and governance. One MBA and countless strategic planning sessions later, I spend my days as a group practice executive. Happily, the road previously taken has not been completely abandoned. I continue to see patients, my first love. I am very fortunate to lack a 'road not taken.'"

"If I were no longer in medical group management, I would seriously consider working in the travel industry. Despite the impact of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, there is still excitement and adventure associated with worldwide travel. Having been in the medical management field for nearly 30 years, I have observed tremendous advances in medical technology and treatments. The same is true with the wonders of air travel. The fact that you can have dinner in Los Angeles, board a plane at 11 p.m. and be in Sydney, Australia, for breakfast 14 hours (and one day) later is just amazing. Meeting people, talking about different cultural experiences and seeing the sights is exciting. Already known for my travel bargains, I may have a running start in the field!"
