Alabama Nurse, Sep-Nov 2003 by Smith, Kim
ASNA District 2 currently serves Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Greene, Hale, Bibb, Lamar and Fayette Counties. We maintain a membership of over 200 nurses and almost half of them are employed at the Tuscaloosa V.A. We meet the first Thursday of every other month (even months) in the private dining room at Northport DCH. We have a board meeting, business meeting and CE offering each month except for the meeting in December. In December we install officers for the following year. We encourage nursing students to participate in ASNA and we distribute fliers at various health care institutions in our service area announcing the upcoming meetings and programs. We offer a variety of programs in order to meet the needs of a variety of nurses. Two recent programs that were very popular were Drug Screening-What Constitutes Reasonable Suspicion? And Asian Beliefs in Child Bearing and Child Rearing.
We are working to recruit more members into ASNA and to get a larger number of our members to attend regularly. We are fortunate that several of our members serve on State committees and keep us well informed. This is a challenging time to be in Nursing.
Last October we hosted our second Women's Health Conference. This half-day event featured screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body fat and more. There were a number of displays where the participants could get information on everything from Smoking Cessation to Alzheimer's. Plus there were speakers on Hormone Replacement, Breast Cancer Awareness, Depression in Women and Financial Planning. About one hundred women attended. Nursing students assisted by manning the sign in table, passing out goody bags and door prizes, assisting with some of the screenings and in the hospitality room.
District 2 members are visible around the state. Several attended FACES and assisted at the sales table. More have already volunteered to help with registration and/or sales at convention. The group made a donation toward the audiovisual needs at convention and also recently made a substantial donation to the West Alabama Girl Scout Council. These funds were to be used to improve a recently acquired Girl Scout camp. We will be well represented at convention. Some of our members will be presenters during the CE day. Last year our President, Jeanette VanderMeer was recognized at Outstanding District President at the convention.
We would like to invite all nurses living or working in our service area to attend our meetings-our business meeting is at 6:00 p.m. and CE offering at 6:30 p.m.
