Alabama Nurse, Dec 2003-Feb 2004
Everyday that you go to work you put yourself, your career and your family at risk. A malpractice claim could happen at any time, and no one wants to get caught up in a lengthy and costly lawsuit. Costly to you in that the same costs are involved whether the claim is legitimate or not. The best way for members to protect themselves is to carry their own liability insurance.
That is why the American Nurses Association offers the ANA-sponsored Professional Liability Insurance Program. It is an excellent opportunity for members to protect themselves from the risk of a malpractice claim. With liability limits up to $2,000,000 per incident/ $4,000,000 aggregate, you can be assured that your family and your assets will be protected.
What's even better is that there are now three ways for you to save on your annual premium. You can receive a 10% premium credit if you have completed or qualify for any of the following:
* Work for a Magnet Hospital
* Participate in an approved risk management seminar earning at least 4 credit hours. (You can take a FREE risk management class online at www.rnce.org.)
* Carry any of the following certifications: ANCC, CCRN, CNOR, CPNP, CRFNA, CRRN, LNCC, OCN®, AONC®, CPON, CWOCN, CWCN, COCN, CCCN, NSNC or NCSN.
ANA knows that your peace of mind is extremely important to you and sought out a plan that would protect you by meeting your unique needs. This provides you with excellent coverage designed to ensure that you will have the most protection for your money. Take a look at just some of the excellent benefits offered by this Plan:
Loss of Earnings Coverage
You may be requested to attend a trial, hearing or arbitration proceeding. The unfortunate thing is that you have to give up your time to attend, and may lose wages in the process. This Plan offers Loss of Earnings coverage for a maximum of $10,000 per incident, including reasonable expenses.
Deposition Reimbursement
If you are required to be deposed, and you do not have your own individual policy, you may have to pay for legal expenses out-of-pocket. This can be expensive for you. The ANA Professional Liability Insurance Plan reimburses you in this situation. The coverage applies when you are not named in a suit but are required to be deposed, for instance, as a witness to the event. You will receive expense reimbursement for up to $5,000 for legal representation for depositions related to your professional duties.
Defense Costs
If a suit is brought against you whether valid or not, the cost involved can be shocking. With this Plan you can feel confident that legal fees and court costs incurred by the insurer on your behalf are paid, for covered claims, in addition to the liability limits even if the suit is groundless, false or fraudulent.
The Chicago Insurance Company, a member of The Fireman's Fund Insurance Group, underwrites the ANA-sponsored Professional Liability Program. Marsh Affinity Group Services, a service of Seabury & Smith, another prominent name in the industry and best known for its excellent and personalized services, administers the plan.
