License Increase

Alabama Nurse,  Dec 2003-Feb 2004

The Alabama Board of Nursing has good news for advanced practice nurses and bad news for registered and licensed practical nurses.

The Board's proposed new fee schedule would decrease the fees for advance practice nurses renewing licenses and increase it for RNs and LPNs.

Under the schedule, the license renewal fee for RNs and LPNs would go from $60 every two years to $75 every two years. The advanced practice renewal fee would decrease from $75 to $50 every two years. However, advanced practice nurses also pay the RNf fee, so if the advance practice fee had been left at $75, the total renewal would have been $150 every two years. Under the Board's new schedule, it will be $125.

The Board also plans to adopt a fee schedule for a new license verification service for organizations which employ nurses. Once an employer provides the license numbers of nurses at the facility, the Board will electronically notify the employer if the license status changes, including whether the license was renewed. The Board of Nursing will charge from $100 to $2,000 per year for the service.

Alabama Board of Nursing Executive Director Genell Lee said the new service will in no way impact the existing telephone verification program, which is free to users. Neither will it affect the individual license verification service for those going to another state.
