Alabama Nurse, Dec 2003-Feb 2004 by Eddins, Don
The Cullman Times recently ran a story about a proposed outpatient surgery center for the area. Anaesthesiologist Kevin Johnson, speaking on behalf of a company applying for the ambulatory surgery permit, stated that employees at such centers are cross-trained. Explaining, he stated, "You'll see nurses who are capable of not only taking care of patients, but of mopping floors." Alabama State Nurses Association Interim Executive Director Helen Wilson fired off a response to the newspaper, noting that nursing pioneers are "taking up their mops" and heading for Cullman. In her letter to the editor, Wilson termed the physician's statement "truly insulting, demeaning, derogatory and unprofessional..." at a time when "we are trying to attract more young people, both men and women, into the nursing profession..." The original story, along with Wilson's response, are printed here for your enjoyment.
