Introduction to Parish Nursing and Congregational Health Ministry

The relationship between faith and health has gained considerable validation in recent years, while congregational health ministries have spread with increasing momentum throughout the country. The American Nurses Association recognizes Parish Nursing as a nursing practice area with published scope and standards for practice. This program will introduce participants to congregational health ministry and the various roles of the parish nurse.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1. describe the history of parish nursing and health ministry;

2. identify rationale for including health ministry in a congregation;

3. understand the spiritual base central to the practice of parish nursing and health ministry;

4. describe components of an effective health ministry committee;

5. discuss components of teamwork and communication important in working on a ministry team;

6. discuss strategies for introducing a health ministry to the congregation.
