Barbara A. Blakeney, MS, RN, is immediate past president of the American Nurses Association. An expert in public health practice and policy and leadership development, Barbara Blakeney, MS, RN is on a leave of absence from her role as the director of health services for the homeless at the Boston Public Health Commission. Prior to this she was the principal public health nurse for homeless services and addiction services at the Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Hospitals in Boston, MA. Barbara also held the position of primary care nurse practitioner at Amherst Medical Associates in Amherst, MA, and Boston City Hospital.
Barbara has held numerous ANA positions including chair of the Committee on Bylaws, member of both the Reference and Nominating Committees, two terms as ANA second vice president and ANA first vice president.
Barbara received her diploma from Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, MA, and her bachelor's of science from the University of Massachusetts, Arnherst and master's of science from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, In addition, she is an Adjunct Professor Department of Family and Community Nursing, University of Massachusetts at Boston.
She is the recipient of numerous awards including ANA's Pearl Mclver Public Health Nurse Award for significant contributions to the field of public health on the national level and Sigma Theta Tau's Theta Alpha Chapter Ann Kibirck Nursing Leadership Award. She was honored by Boston Women's Magazine as one of the 100 women whose work has contributed to the betterment of Boston, is listed in Who's Who in American Nursing and was named to Modern Healthcare Magazine's 2002, 2003 and 2004 list of the 100 Most Powerful People in Health Care.
