Essential Oils from the Leaves of the Australian Species of Palmeria (Monimiaceae)

The oils obtained from Palmeria are similar to some of the oils obtained from other Australian genera of the Monimiaceae. Australian species of Dryadodaphne and Kibara, both contain sesquiterpenoid leaf oils, while Levieria acuminata contains significant amounts of aliphatic aldehydes and alcohols in its oil (22). Doryphom sassafras gives an oil rich in methyl eugenol, safrole and camphor while D. aromatica gives a sesquiterpenic oil with significant amounts of elemol and guaiol (23). Austromatthea elegans gives an oil rich in the aromatic esters, benzyl benzoate and benzyl salicylate (24). The presence of ishwarane in some samples is unusual. This compound has not been often reported since it was first identified, from the roots ofAristolochia indica (25). Spectroscopic data for ishwarane are also given in (26).
