Essential Oil of Johrenia ramosissima Mozaffarian from Iran

Journal of Essential Oil Research: JEOR, Sep/Oct 2004 by Habibi, Zohreh, Monfared, Azam, Masoudi, Shiva, Rustaiyan, Abdolhossein

Abstract

A water-distilled essential oil from the aerial parts ofjohrenia ramosissima Mozaffarian, a newly described endemic species in Iran, was analyzed by GC/MS. Thirty-five compounds representing 88.5% of the oil were identified with bornyl acetate (14.8%), frans-pinocarveol (12.5%) and oc-campholenol (9.5%) as main constituents.

Key Word Index

Johrenia ramosissima, Umbelliferae, essential oil composition, bornyl acetate, frans-pinocarveol.

Plant Name

Johrenia ramosissima Mozaffarian, Umbelliferae (1).

Source

Aerial parts of J, ramosissima were collected from Marzan Abad-Chalous in Province of Mazandaran in the north region of Iran, in July 1999, at flowering stage. A voucher specimen has been deposited in the Herbarium of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands (TARI), Tehran, Iran (72725).

Plant Part

Dried aerial parts (160 g) were water distilled for 3 h using a Clevenger-type apparatus to yield 0.1% w/w oil.

Previous Work

Five species of the genus Johrenia are found in Iran, all of which are endemic: J, gloestanica, J. latycarpa, J. paucijuga, J. aromatica and J. ramosissima (2). A literature survey revealed that the oil of J, ramosissima has not been previously studied, so we decided to examine the oil.

Present Work

The oil was analyzed by GC/MS using a Hewlett-Packard 5973 mass selective connected with an HP 6890 gas chromatograph. The separation was achieved by capillary column, HP5MS (5% phenylmethylpolysiloxane) (30 m x 0.25 mm, film thickness 0.25 ). The column temperature was kept at 60C for 20 min and then programmed to 220C at a rate of 5C/min, and kept constant at 220C for 20 min. The flow rate of helium as carrier gas was 1 mL/min, MS were taken at 70 eV

The identification of the constituents was made by comparing their mass spectra and retention indices with those given in the literature and with those of authentic samples (3). Relative percentage amounts were calculated from TIC data by the computer. The compounds identified in the oil of J. mmosissima are listed in Table I.
