Composition of the Essential Oil of Peucedanum cervariifolium C.A. Mey. from Iran
Journal of Essential Oil Research: JEOR, Jul/Aug 2005 by Bazgir, Ayoob, Shaabani, Ahmad, Sefidkon, Fatemeh
Abstract
The water-distilled oil from the aerial parts of Peucedanum cervariifolium of Iranian origin was analyzed by a combination of GC and GC/MS. Twenty-eight components were identified, which approximately constituted 93.3% of the oil. The major constituents of the oil were α-guaiene (11.9%), γ-muurolene (7.4%), viridiflorene (10.9%), α-selinene (16.3%) and β-selinene (27.4%).
Key Word Index
Peucedanum cervariifolium, essential oil composition, α-guaiene, γ-muurolene, viridiflorene, α-selinene, β-selinene.
Plant Name
Peucedanum cervariifolium C.A. Mey. [syn. Peucedanum sintenisii H. Wolff, Cervaria cervariifolia (C.A. Mey.) M. Pimen].
Source
The plant material was collected from Mazandaran province at full flowering stage in July 2001. A voucher specimen has been deposited in the Herbarium of the Department of Phytochemistry, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Drug Research Institute, Shahid Beheshti University.
Plant Part
Air-dried aerial parts of the plants (60 g) were subjected to hydrodistillation for 4 h using a Clevenger-type apparatus to produce oil in 0.11% yield.
Previous Work
To the best of our knowledge, the oil of P. cervariifolium has not been the subject of previous study. There are references about the fruit oil of P. oreoselinum (1,2) and chemical constituents of P. wawarii (Wolff) Su root (3).
Present Work
The oil was analyzed using a combination of capillary GC and GC/MS. The GC (9A-Shimadzu) and GC/MS (Varian 3400), column (DB-I, 60 m x 0.25 mm, fused silica capillary column, film thickness 0.25 µm) by temperature program 50°-240°C at a rate of 4°C/min (injector temperature: 260°C, carrier gas: helium). EI mass spectra were measured of 70 eV ionization voltage over the mass range 40-340. The constituents were identified by matching their mass spectra and retention indices with those recorded in the Saturn Data system, and quantitative data were obtained based on peak area of GC by normalization method without considering the response factors.
The chemical composition of the aerial parts oil of P. cervariifolium can be seen in Table I. The main components of the oil were α-guaiene (11.9%), γ-muurolene (7.4%), viridiflorene (10.9%), α-selinene(16.3%) and β-selinene (27.4 %).
