Building bridges of light and hope
Word Among Us, Jun 2003 by Johnson, Cynthy
Bridges of Light and Hope. God continues to work in my life and has been leading me in ways I could never have imagined. Last month, after several years of training, I became a qualified spiritual director. It is my hope that this will help me reach out more effectively to the people God sends my way. Recently, I also returned to playing music for God and began taking harp lessons. My goal is to play the harp in church one day and also to become a certified therapist who brings God's gift of music to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice centers.
Finally, as I have followed developments in the sex abuse crisis in the church, I have found myself wanting to respond in some positive way. Last Advent, I discussed this with another survivor of sexual abuse, and we came up with an idea for a prayer outreach that we call "Building Bridges of Light and Hope." The idea is for Catholics to pledge to light a candle and say a prayer every day for a survivor of abuse and for survivors to commit to daily prayer for church members who need healing and reconciliation. This is a small step, but one that many people are welcoming; about two hundred are involved so far. We pray that God will use it to promote peace and understanding among survivors, laypeople and clergy.
Having seen my own woundedness transformed into active compassion and empathy for others, I have great faith that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him" (Romans 8:28). Deep wounds will heal when exposed to light and air-the light of Christ and the breath of God!
