From Confusion to Communion
Word Among Us, Jun 2004 by Avallone, Lauralyn
As I walk in the Communion line, I reflect on God's love and wisdom. By receiving the Body of Christ, I am saying I respect the path God has chosen for me and that I will accept it with strong faith and a quiet mouth. Because I know God's love, I no longer have to question my role in the universe.
Receiving the Eucharist, I receive strength to face life's difficulties. With Jesus' help, I will swallow my pride, as well as the hurtful or angry words that might otherwise escape my lips. At mealtimes, I will remember to give thanks for my daily bread.
Kneeling or sitting in prayer after Communion, I think about Jesus and his loving sacrifice for me and for all people, who often seem so undeserving. Looking at him, I can be calm during difficult times and keep my suffering in perspective. I'm not the only one in the world who faces hardship and pain, and all of life's tough times are temporary. I know too that God can bring good out of suffering-a wisdom and endurance I never knew I had.
Rising to stand after prayer, I see myself rising above fears and anxiety, just as Jesus did. I resolve to appreciate all the gifts God has given me, including the gift of my life. Instead of getting hard on myself when I fall, I'll get up, dust myself off, and try again.
Little by little, my relationship with God is growing, and a future full of promise is emerging. The more I meet Jesus in the Eucharist, the harder it becomes to fathom those faithless days.
