NCAA Recruiting Policies Overhauled

Women's Basketball, Oct 2004

The NCAA Board of Directors recently approved a package of recruiting changes aimed at limiting perks for athletic prospects.

The proposals were adopted by emergency legislation and bypassed the usual one-year process.

Under the new rules, the use of charter flights or private planes on recruiting trips is now outlawed. Only school vehicles or standard-equipped vehicles will be allowed to transport recruits and their families. Schools can provide recruits with standard fare meals and rooms, but may not take them to lavish five-star eateries and hotels.

The NCAA will now require schools to adopt a written recruiting policy. Schools must file these policies by Dec. 1 with their conferences before any recruits can visit this year. Independent schools must file with the NCAA.
