Women's Basketball, Feb 2005

Suggestion

I love basketball. I just got the December issue. It's a good issue. I think you should do a special thing for the high school girls who are going into college and then on to the WNBA. You should put out an article or add in something that says anybody who plays high school basketball can nominate the seniors who play and are good and then they could write why they think they are good and you guys could do an issue on the future college stars.

Alicia Glifort Bridgeport, Conn.

Editor: Alicia, your note brings to light our new "Futures" section that now appears in every issue and highlights youth stars from around the country. This issue also features a look at some of the top high school teams and players to watch for this season (Page 31).

And to all of our readers, if you would like to nominate someone for inclusion in "Futures," all you have to do is send in a brief synopsis (including player's name, height, position, hometown and high school) on the player and include a color headshot of the player. You can e-mail all submissions to me at mmiazga@madavor.com

New Mexico

Thanks for the great article on our super Lady Lobos from the University of New Mexico (Quick Tip, July-August, 04 issue). Yes, they are awesome on defense and great on offense too. New Mexico won the Mountain West Conference championship as well as the tournament and have made three consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament. They were fourth in the nation in attendance. So we fans in New Mexico think they are the best. Thanks for the national exposure.

WNBA Thoughts

I personally feel that WNBA players and staffers posing nude in magazines, no matter how "tasteful" is wrong. It sets a bad example for young women and girls as this and other women's sports leagues should be about family values.

Magazine Comments

Kudos to the staff to take on the challenge of bringing Women's Basketball back to life. The changes have been wonderful. I come from a family of editors. Thank you for a wonderful job you've done thus far. It really makes a difference.

WNBA Finals

I was in attendance for the last game of the WNBA Finals at Key Arena in Seattle. I've been to a lot of women's basketball games over the years and have never been in an atmosphere that was so raucous. The place was packed to the rafters and enthusiasm abounded the entire game. Once Seattle won Game 3, the place went nuts. If this is any indication on the current state of the women's pro game, I believe the WNBA has turned the corner.

I don't know how Sue Bird performed with that plastic mask on her face? If that was me, I would have gone nuts. Her being on the court so quickly after an injury proves just how tough of a player she is and how valuable she is to the Seattle Storm and the WNBA as a whole.

Nice to see another fresh face once again in the WNBA winners circle. I'm glad to see a little more parity where teams like Houston and Los Angeles are not repeating as champions. But if Seattle keeps its team intact, I'm afraid they might just join the repeat club next season. They have an impressive team and the best player in the game in Lauren Jackson.

Nutrition

Thanks for the story on peanut butter that ran in a recent issue (Nutrition, November-December, 2004). I'm a high school girls coach and continuously stress to my players that peanut butter is a much better alternative (and cost-effective) for an on-the-run type of food than stopping off at the local fast food establishment. Please print more of these nutrition-type things. I don't think young players realize how important nutrition is in the overall scheme.
