A ROMAN GOD IN ALABAMA: BIRMINGHAM'S VULCAN

Alabama Heritage, Winter 2004 by Hartigan, Karelisa

In 2003, Vulcan rose again over Birmingham, this time with his spear recreated-the neon torch only a memory. City residents had waited with eager anticipation to see their old friend returned to his empty pedestal on Red Mountain. To them, he represents the vision that built the city. Like his namesake deity, Birmingham's Vulcan has suffered hardship and humiliation, but he now holds a place of highest honor in Alabama's leading city.

Karelisa Hartigan is a Professor of Classics at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.
