Doggy Doggerel

Ask,  Oct 2004

In our April issue we asked you to write your own doggerel poem. We don't have room to print all the contest entries, so we've put more on our Web site at www.cricketmag.com (click on "For Kids").

Dog

Paws walk on the floor-tap, tap.

Mouths eat food on the ground-munch, munch.

Tongues loll after a run-pant, pant.

Water flies from fur-splat, splat.

Tap, munch, pant, splat-dog, dog.

-Perry N., age 9, Illinois

A Life without Strife

I got up at 4:00

And lay on the floor,

Ate kibble at 5:00

And found a beehive.

The bees were not happy

But the honey was sappy!

Got walked around 10:00,

Then fell asleep again.

School ended at 3:00

So my friends came home to me!

I got my shot for rabies

And then I sniffed the baby.

The owner had ginger snaps

And fed me his scraps!

Went to bed around 9:00,

Today was divine!

You know what they say,

A dog's life is all play.

Well this dog's life

Is truly without strife!

-Allison S., age 11, New York

My Dog Laika

Laika.

Lying on Daddy's bed.

Curled up like a donut.

With his eyes closed.

His tail on his nose.

Laika.

Bad Puppy Chester

I have a little puppy named Chester.

He looks really cute, but he is a big disaster.

He runs around and knocks things down.

He's my bad puppy Chester.

-LuLu S., age 7, Ohio

If I Had 8 More Dogs

If I had 8 more dogs,

Then I would have 10 dogs in all.

I hope my new 8 dogs would

Be as lazy as dogs can get

Because I think it would

Be hard to move around

With 8 new dogs running

All over the house,

Knocking over and chewing on

Everything, and

I would be busy setting things

Up, moving things around and

Making repairs until bedtime.

Goodnight!

-Jack T., age 9, North Carolina
