Walk or Roll Robot Contest
Ask, Jul/Aug 2005
In our February issue we asked you to design a robot that walks, rolls, or both. We don't have room to print all the entries, so we've put more on our Web site at www.cricketmag.com (click on "For Kids").
Sir Rolly is a robot that is used for security in museums and houses. It moves by roller skating or by walking. If you press a button on its backpack, its wheels slip in, enabling it to walk.
Mattia F, age 10, South Africa
R.U.M.
My robot is called a R.U.M. It gets the "R" from roll, the "U" from jump, and the "M" from climb. It only likes to roll in the rain, so when it rains, the rain goes into the rain tube and it turns the gears to make the wheels turn. It uses its springs to jump and its hooks to climb.
Ben S., age 6, Pennsylvania
Lariadon
This robot gets around by rolling. Instead of feet it has wheels. It also has metal plates and screws of different colors.
Laura Maria S., age 8, Florida
This robot walks on legs.
Matthew A., age 8, California
Dolph-Bot
It's like a dolphin only easier to train. It's not shy of humans and can see miles away. It attracts visitors as much as real dolphins.
Cara S., age 9, Georgia
This robot is called Technosub 800. He is a substitute teacher robot. He can walk because he has special metals in his feet that help him balance.
Hannah N., age 8, North Dakota
