Go fly a kite

Ask, May/Jun 2008 by Moss, Meg

Wind power is making a comeback on the high seas. More than a century after engines replaced sails, naval engineers are figuring out new ways to use the wind to power ocean-going vessels. They hope this will cut down on the expense and pollution of fossil fuels. One innovation, called a SkySail, is a giant, computer-guided kite that can tow a cargo ship along by harnessing the strong winds high above the ocean.

The kite, which measures at least 1,700 square feet, is launched from a tall mast to fly high above the deck. Connected to the ship by strong cables, the kite can be programmed to adjust the ship's course and speed. While it doesn't replace the engine, it can reduce its use. The SkySail's inventors think that it can cut fuel use by almost half, if the wind is blowing just right.
