Yo Wants to Know

Click,  Apr 2004  by Daniel, Lea,  Daniel, Alan

"We grow dirt in here," says Yo.

"You can't grow dirt," says Jennifer. "This is just garbage. Banana peels and eggshells and tea bags and leaves . . ."

"It's all turning into dirt," says Yo. "See? We already got some."

"Hey! No pop cans. It only works with things that used to grow."

"Like grass," says Mom. "All that stuff is decaying and turning into special dirt called compost."

"Can I sprinkle in some water?" asks Yo.

"Go ahead. Everything is pretty dry," says Mom. "I'll just mix things up."

"What I'd like to know," asks Jennifer, "is why do you need more dirt?"

"Compost has lots of food in it for my plants," answers Mom.

"Mom's flowers will get to eat my apple core," says Yo. "Isn't that neat?"
