New Jersey extends Medicaid contract

Enterprise Networks & Servers, Sep 2005

The State of New Jersey has awarded Unisys Corp. a three-year contract extension, valued at an estimated $90 million, to continue managing the state's Medicaid administration services for the Department of Human Services.

As the state's Medicaid fiscal agent since 1989, Unisys is responsible for processing and paying medical and pharmaceutical bills submitted by providers - such as doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, therapists, pharmacies, etc. - that have treated beneficiaries eligible for the state's Medicaid program.

"Medicaid is one of the largest budget items for U.S. states," Greg Baroni, president of Unisys Global Public sector, said. "State healthcare administrations are under tremendous pressure to reduce costs while meeting complex requirements. Unisys has worked with New Jersey's healthcare programs over the years to help expand its services, increase responsiveness, reduce fraud and promote equitable access to healthcare for Medicaid beneficiaries in New Jersey."

For 28 years, Unisys has supplied information technology and business process outsourcing services to the health-payer administration market. In 2004, Unisys processed more than 282 million medical claims, served approximately 249,000 healthcare providers and 3.7 million beneficiaries, and issued more than $23.8 billion in payments to beneficiaries.
