* FASTER MASTER: Former Princeton star Mike Ross, 36, recently became the first Masters swimmer to crack 50 seconds in the 100 yard backstroke. Competing for New England Masters in the men's 35-39 age group, Ross clocked 49.62. For good measure, he set another national record in the 35-39 age group by zipping to a time of 1:39.90 for the 200 free.

* STAYING: David Marsh, one of the nation's top-paid college coaches, inked a lucrative eight-year contract that will keep him at Auburn University through 2013.

* LEAVING: Richard Quick, Stanford women's coach for 17 years, stepped down, saying he wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren. Quick, 62, was a three-time head U.S. women's Olympic coach who led his Stanford and Texas women's teams to 12 NCAA titles.
