* UGANDA
Telecoms firm MTN Uganda won the most improved purchasing organisation award at this month's Procurecon conference in Brussels.
Judges praised the firm's centrally managed procurement structure, which has improved compliance. It also highlighted the purchasing training offered to staff.
Other award winners included L'Oreal for corporate responsibility and EDP Energy for innovation.
* PHILIPPINES
World Bank help in improving roads in the Philippines has been suspended until problems with the procurement process have been amended.
It said two big contracts had been rejected between 2003 and 2006 because of signs of collusion and excessive pricing from suppliers during bidding.

Ford's head of purchasing, Tony Brown, and its global product chief, Derrick Kuzak, are to meet CEOs of suppliers to improve relations.
Kuzak told Reuters he and Brown want direct feedback on the firm's relationships with suppliers: "They're intertwined in our product development process. The only way we can improve our cost is if they improve their cost."
He said he understood suppliers were unhappy about a cut in Ford's production last year.
* SINGAPORE
Rolls-Royce is to set up a plant in Singapore to build engines for aeroplanes.
The firm said the new plant, alongside its factory in the UK, will provide two sourcing options for its engines. It will also bring the firm closer to its customers in Asia.
The factory will employ 330 people and be operational by the end of 2009.
