Botswana upgrades airport

African Business,  Mar 2008

Aviation

Botswana has raised a P62m ($10m) loan with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (Badea) for a planned upgrade of the country's principal airport and its international gateway, the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. This sum will complement funding of $20.6m received from Opec's Fund for International Development. A further P166m ($26.77m) will be raised locally. The loan will go towards the upgrade and expansion of the terminal building, extending the runway and building a parallel taxiway. Construction begins next month and when completed by the end of 2009 will allow the airport to handle wide-bodied aircraft - seen as critical for the future growth of the tourism sector.
