Meeting the new UGS PLM Software

Tooling & Production, Sep 2007

Executives from Siemens, along with their newly acquired division, UGS PLM Software, a division of Siemens Automation and Drives, detailed how the two companies will be working together to deliver product lifecycle management for manufacturers at the first Media and Analyst Forum 2007, held in June in New York City, since the $3.5 billion acquisition was completed in early May.

Focusing on the thought behind Siemens' acquisition of UGS, Group Vice President of Siemens Automation & Drives Anton Huber says, "UGS will now fill the hole A&D had in its product portfolio."

Tony Affuso, chairman and CEO of UGS outlined Project Archimedes although no definitive time frame was announced. Project Archimedes will bring product design, development, and production together in what Affuso terms use cases: Adaptive Manufacturing, Virtual Commissioning, Harmonized Lifecycles, Hi-Fi Machining, and Mechatronics.

"Project Archimedes is leveraging joint technology to deliver value and would not be possible without with the technology Siemens and UGS have together," states Affuso. Adaptive Manufacturing focuses on intelligent production components for the integration of process and automation design with UGS Teamcenter. Virtual Commissioning is the validation engine for process, automation, and MES. Integrating the PLM backbone with production - bidirection MES and controller integration - is the Harmonized Lifecycles focus while Hi-Fi Machining will be a tighter link between CAM and physical controllers. Mechantronics will focus directly on the electronics industry.

"Siemens and UGS have come together to drive both a compelling and shared vision for changing the game in the PLM and automation markets through the integration of the virtual and physical world," says Affuso. "The combination of Siemens and UGS will strengthen our ability to enable global innovation networks as well as an open architecture on which companies can accelerate their own ability to innovate."
