J. WAYNE CHASTAIN, P.E., is an engineering associate in the Technical Services Group of Eastman Chemical Co."s Plant Protection Dept. He has more than 16 years of industrial experience in the design, start-up, operation and safety of chemical processes. He is currently the chairman of Tennessee Eastman's Hazardous Chemicals Committee, which is charged with identifying and assessing chemical hazards and establishing guidelines related to chemical fires, explosions, and thermal hazards. His other responsibilities include DIERS reactive and two-phase relief calculations, hazardous chemicals testing coordination and interpretation, layers of protection analysis, safety instrumented systems design and evaluation, and process hazard analyses. He holds a BS in chemical engineering from Clemson Univ. and is a registered professional engineer in Tennessee.
WILLIAM W. DOERR, PhD, is director of risk, reliability and failure prevention research at FM Global (1151 Boston-Providence Tpke., Norwood, MA 02062; Phone: (781) 225-4986; E-mail: william.doerr@fmgtobal.com). His areas of technical expertise are hazard analysis, risk analysis and reduction (via prevention, design or protection), methodology development, scenario development for accidental chemical releases from processes, mass transport modeling, and phase equilibrium thermodynamics. His recent efforts have involved insurance risk transfer, estimation of the likelihood of accidental scenarios, and risk-based inspection and fire risk. He has worked as a chemical engineer in industry and academia, including as a visiting assistant professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Doerr received a BA in economics and BS in chemical engineering from Tufts Univ., and an MS in chemical engineering practice and PhD in chemical engineering from MIT.
SCOTT A. BERGER is director of AIChE's Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) (3 Park Ave., New York, NY 10016; Phone: (212) 591-7237; Fax: (212) 591-8883; E-mail: scotb@aiche.org). He has nearly 30 years of experience working in and with industry, focusing on safer and more environmentally friendly process and product technologies. He began his career at Rohm and Haas and then later worked at Owens Corning before coming to CCPS. Berger holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a Fellow of AIChL He is also a member of the Lawrence Township (N)) Community Emergency Response Team.
