Medical Marketing and Media, Mar 2001

AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb lead the industry in new advanced-stage cardiovascular drugs in clinical trails with three each in Phase III. In all, there are 122 new medicines currently in development to treat heart disease and stroke, according to a survey released by PhRMA.

The AstraZeneca agents are Atacand (candisartan cilexetil) for congestive heart failure, Crestor for hyperlipidemia, and H376/95 for stroke. In addition, Toprol XL has just been released for a new indication, congestive heart failure. It is the first beta blocker to get a once-a-day dosage for the indication.

Bristol-Myers developed Avapro (irbesantan) for heart failure, Maxipost (maxi K channel opener) for neuroprotection in stroke, and Vanlev (omapatrilat) for isolated systemic hypertension, all in Phase III. Forms of Vanlev also are in Phase II tests for angina and congestive heart failure. In all, potential new cardiovascular drugs include 18 each for stroke and congestive heart failure, 11 for high blood pressure, and 9 for heart attack.
