Kuraray Hikes "Kuralon" and PSF Prices

Asian Textile Business, Jun 2006

Kuraray Co., Ltd. raised its prices of "Kuralon" and "Kuralon K-II" polyvinyl alcohol fibers by 5% (30-50 yen/kg respectively) for domestic and overseas shipments from May 1st. The company last increased its prices in November 2005.

Kuraray decided to hike its prices as a result of sharp rises in raw material and fuel costs caused by surging crude oil and naphtha prices. The company was compelled to raise its prices due to the unexpected drop of business beyond the permissible limits despite the effects from the previous price revision and cost reduction endeavors.

"Kuralon" is used as a reinforcing agent for cement and mortar as an alternative to asbestos. It is also employed for other industrial applications including as a reinforcing fiber in paper, nonwoven fabrics and rubber materials.

"Kuralon K-II" includes highstrength solvent type and water-solvent type fibers.

Kuraray also increased its prices for "Krafter" and other polyester staple fibers by 5% (20-40 yen/kg) for domestic and overseas shipments from May 1st for the same reason. Kuraray's polyester staple fibers are used as raw stock in nonwoven fabrics, as well as for industrial yarn and knits including sewing threads and garments.
