Schilling Robotics purchases assets of ALSTOM Schilling Robotics

Sea Technology, Nov 2003

The assets of ALSTOM Schilling Robotics (ASR) have been purchased by Schilling Robotics LLC, a new company owned primarily by former ASR managers. The ownership change took place on October 9, 2003.

Schilling Robotics is headquartered at the former ASR main facility in Davis, California. All ASR staff members have been retained by the new company. In addition to the purchase of the Davis headquarters, the agreement includes employees and assets of the Aberdeen, Scotland, operation. The transfer of the Aberdeen operation is scheduled to complete within the next two months.

Schilling Robotics Chief Executive Officer Tyler Schilling stated, "This ownership change comes at a perfect time for all parties. We were seeking the flexibility to expand our product line into new markets, and ALSTOM wanted to sell selected assets to improve its capital structure and reduce debt. Both companies will benefit from the change."

An ambitious product development program, begun in 1998, has produced the Remote Systems Engine (RSE), Schilling Robotics' set of fundamental building blocks for underwater control, communication, propulsion and actuation. The RSE modules, which can be broadly applied to a range of deep-ocean machines, form the basis for Schilling Robotics' line of ROVs. The QUEST electric WROV will soon be joined by the QUEST UHD models, a new class of ultra high-performance hydraulic work-class ROVs. Because the RSE building blocks are designed to work together, they allow parts commonality across a variety of devices.

The RSE building blocks also include Schilling Robotics' four standard remote manipulator systems, the Titan 3, Orion, RigMaster and Conan.
