Africa Command Will Focus on Maritime Security

Sea Technology, Feb 2008

Maritime security will be a top priority for the newly created U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

African nations such as Mozambique and Tanzania typically lose more than $1 billion dollars a year to illegal fishing, reef destruction and species depletion in their waters, officials said.

Drugs and arms are being moved through Africa, and there is trafficking in oil and people via maritime routes, the U.S.Navy said. There is also piracy, which is negatively impacting international shipping.

AFRICOM will focus not on combat, but on supporting, advising and building the capacity of professional, civiliancontrolled African forces. Part ofthat relationship is identifying what tools African nations need to help themselves.

In most cases, AFRJCOM will enhance existing military-to-military relations with stable African nations and try to make a contribution to stability on the continent, said the Navy.
