100th Anniversary of the Great White Fleet Celebrated

Sea Technology, Mar 2008

The U.S. Navy is honoring the anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt's Great White Fleet deployment over the next year to underscore the Navy's commitment to sustaining a Navy and Marine Corps responsive to the challenges of the 21st century, officials said. The secretary of the Navy hosted a ceremony in Hampton Roads, Virginia, aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71 ).

In 1907, Roosevelt sent 16 Atlantic fleet battleships plus auxiliaries on a world tour to test naval readiness, establish global presence and generate international goodwill. Four thousand sailors and Marines were embarked on the 14month, 43,000-mile journey that made 20 port calls on six continents.
