Navy to Commission Amphibious Transport Dock Ship Green Bay

Sea Technology, Mar 2009

The U.S. Navy commissioned the newest San Antonioclass amphibious transport docking ship Green Bay on January 24 at a ceremony in Long Beach, California.

The ship is named Green Bay to honor the nation's Midwest "city by the bay," the Navy said. The city of about 100,000 residents was founded in 1634 by French explorer Jean Nicolet and is the oldest community in Wisconsin.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England delivered the ceremony's principal address. Rose Magnus, wife of the former assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Robert Magnus (ret.), is the ship's sponsor.

In partnership with Naval Sea Systems Command, Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships is responsible for the development and acquisition of San Antonio-class ships. PEO Ships is currently managing the design and construction of 1 1 major ship classes and various small boats and craft, the Navy said.
