UL chairman of board Edward S. Bottum dies

Edward S. Bottum, chairman of Underwriters Laboratories Inc.'s board of trustees, died May 24 at age 68. He had served as a UL trustee for five years and was elected chairman on May 7, 2002.
Bottum, a Winnetka, Illinois, resident, was the managing director of Chase Franklin Corp., a venture capital firm in Chicago, and served as a corporate director of several companies, including Henderson Global Investors Inc. and Kellwood Corp. For 31 years he worked for Continental Bank Corp., retiring as vice chairman in 1990. He was a graduate of Purdue University, Harvard Business School, and University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. "We are very fortunate to have known Ed Bottum as both friend and visionary leader," said Loring Knoblauch, UL's president, CEO, and interim chairman. "Ed brought both a commitment to public safety and a solid business background that made a great difference to all of us. We cherished his spirit and are incredibly saddened by his sudden passing."
