COMMISSION OKAYS SMURFIT AND KAPPA LINK-UP

PPI, Dec 2005

EUROPE

The European Commission has approved the proposed merger of the Jefferson Smurfit Group and Kappa Packaging. The commission said that its competition concerns had been allayed by the groups' commitment to sell off some converting plants in Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and Scotland.

The packaging giants said the link-up is still subject to other conditions, including consultation with employee representatives. The merged entity will be named Smurfit Kappa Group and will have operations spanning 23 European and nine Latin American countries, with a capacity of 6.1 million tonnes/yr of containerboard.
