ARTS ACADEMY HONOURS MULTI-TALENTED ACCOUNTANT

Accountancy SA,  Sep 2007

For the first time ever, the South African Academy for Arts and Science has awarded the Stals Prize for Economic and Management Sciences to a chartered accountant

Prof Dave Lubbe of the Centre for Accounting at the University of the Free State, is no stranger to firsts. Thus:

* the first Afrikaans text book in Auditing flowed from his pen;

* he was the first person in South Africa to attain a doctorate in Auditing; and

* he was the first recipient of the Ernst Et Young Outstanding Accounting Research Award, which was bestowed on him in 2002 by the Southern African Accounting Association.

He makes regular appearances as a speaker, both domestically and overseas, and is often a guest lecturer at various universities. He serves as Professor Extraordinaire in Accounting at the University of Stellenbosch.

Lubbe's particular field of expertise is corporate governance and business ethics.

As a management consultant, he has served, among other posts, as chairperson of various audit committees in both the public and private sectors.

As a forensic accountant, and with a law degree to his credit, he has served over the years as an assessor to the high courts in many well-publicised fraud cases.

Lubbe has also established himself as a respected poet, having frequently been the winner or runner-up in national poetry competitions. Many of his poems have been included in accredited literary journals and anthologies.

In 2006, the collection titled Honderdjaar later was published as a tribute to the writer Eugene Marais. It featured 50 poems of current and deceased South African poets, one of which was Lubbe's Kitchener.

Nor are his achievements limited to academic matters. As an athlete, he has completed all of South Africa's well-known ultramarathons. He holds a black belt in karate and has developed a popular self-defence course. "There is a great need for this. Ladies, with the very real fear of rape in mind, especially enjoy the course," he says.

His hobbies include welding and woodwork, and Vespa scooters, of which he owns several.
