Alstom will upgrade Swedish nuclear turbines

Turbomachinery International, Jan/Feb 2006

Alstom has won a 180 million euro contract to provide steam turbine and generator equipment to the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant in Sweden. This is part of an upgrade project that will increase the output of the Boiling Water Reactor plant from 1,200 MW to more than 1,450 MW and extend its life by more than 35 years. The turbine-generator set contains one high-pressure steam turbine, three low-pressure steam turbines and one generator.

In addition, Alstom will replace moisture separator-reheaters, high-pressure heat exchangers, three single-phase main transformers, main steam valves and other balance of plant equipment, as well as carrying out dismantling, installation, commissioning and testing of the modernized plant. The main installation work will be performed during a planned outage in 2008.

Meanwhile the OEM has won contracts worth over 200 million euros for the supply of equipment and services for the Afam VI combined cycle power plant project at Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Alstom will supply three GT13E2 gas turbines (167 MW each) and auxiliary equipment to Daewoo E & C Co. that is in-charge of the engineering, procurement and construction. The end customer is Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

Alstom will also provide long-term operation support and maintenance services for the gas turbines and generators. Including these turbines, Alstom has sold over 109 GTl3E2 machines.

Earlier, the OEM won a contract for around 425 million euros from Sohar Aluminium Company for the turnkey construction of a 1,000 MW combined cycle power plant in Oman. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2008.

The power plant will supply electricity to a new aluminum smelter. Alstom's scope of supply includes four GT13E2 gas turbines, four heat recovery steam generators, two steam turbines, six generators, a digitial control system, and the balance of plant.
